Soteriology • Salvation ♦ 193 everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6).
In the Gospel of John, Jesus had claimed repeatedly that "[He] and the Fathersireone" 0ohn10:30;14:10;17:11,22);thattheFatherisinHimandHe in the Father (John 14:7, 9); that He that has seen Him has seen the Father (John 12:44-45); smd that He is from above Qohn8:23); and said "I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world" Qohn16:28); He also said that He has come in his Father's Name, indicating that he had no different sub
sistence apart from the Father Qohn 5:43; 6:57). When Jesus said, "...if ye believe not that 1 am he, ye shall die in your sins" Qohn 8:24), "They imder- stood not that he spake to them of the Father" Qohn8:27). That did not leave anyroomofuncertaintytoHisdisciplesastoHistrueidentity. Headded, "When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he,
and that I do nothing of myself" Qohn 8:28).
This was the main accusation by the Jews: "For a good work,we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man makest thy self God" Qohn 10:33). The reality was that God the Father had manifested Himself as God-Man Qohn 1:1,T4; Luke 1:31-35; Matthew 1:21-23; I Timothy
3:16; Colossians 2:9) and not Man-God (Hosea 11:9; I Samuel 15:29).
Hisdisciplesheard himsay,"Ithankthee,OFather,Lordofheavenand earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so. Father; for so it seemed good to thy sight.
All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and to whom the Son will reveal him" (Luke 10:21-22). In this respect, the record of Matthew records the fulfillment of the prophecy of Zecharlah which foretold, "Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sit
tinguponanass,andacoltthefoalofanass"(Matthew21:5). Itwas"the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the son of David" (Matthew 21:15), and the shout of the multitude, "Blessed is he that cometh i n the name of the Lo]:d; Hosanna in the highest" (Matthew 21:9) that dis pleased thechief priests (Matthew 21:15). Surely, in that day itwas the shout
of great joy that the Lord would have expected from the daughter of Zion: "Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his sal vation" (Isaiah 25:9).
Luke also recognized the Lord as Saviour, from the wonderful events which surrounded the birth of Jesus the Christ: "And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said imto them. Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is bom this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe
