05The bicycle industry is an important industry of Taiwan with international competitiveness. It has a place in the global high-grade product market, and a significant contribution to Taiwan's output value, employment population and foreign exchange income. To stabilize the leading position of Taiwan%u2019s bicycle industry in the world in the face of the ever-changing global market, it is necessary to continue the innovation, improvement and break-through in the value chain of middle and high-grade bicycles ensure our competitiveness.To generate innovative energy and the driving force of industrial technology R&D, the Department of Industrial Technology, Ministry of Economic Affairs has been bringing together global product design ideas and product practices through the International Bicycle Design Competition (IBDC) since 1996. In 2018, IBDC will focus on bicycle riding, and integrate life and technology themes to encourage the innovative design of intelligent products. This year, the category of cross-field innovative products is added in a hope to guide designers through the theme of diversity to create more valuable cross-field products, and drive the domestic bicycle industry to become the global creative hub and commercialization base for bicycles.In the past 22 years, IBDC has attracted outstanding design talents from all over the world to exchange ideas and learn from each other on this creative and innovative platform. IBDC has been accumulating rich original bicycle design resources for a long time, and has stimulated the domestic bicycle industry and talents to continuously invest in R&D and innovation, and has promoted Taiwan as a pioneer in the bicycle-based life style, in a hope to achieve the goal of \d implementing innovation in the industry.\I am very grateful to the bicycle industry for its long-term efforts to establish a successful model of industrial innovation and transformation. I would also like to thank the organizers of the International Bicycle Design Competition for their efforts for more than 20 years in the past, thus making our country the resource center of international bicycle design by leading the trend through design concepts every year.
