The history of Palm Springs is as varied as those who live there
and come to visit. From the native Agua Caliente Cahuilla
Indians to the first pioneers. From the early Hollywood stars to
the mid-century modernist architects. From celebrity mayor,
Sonny Bono, to today’s rediscovery, Palm Springs remains an
historical and ecological wonder.
For thousands of years, the Coachella Valley was home to the
Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. During the winter
months, they established their village around the natural
hot mineral springs. In summer, to escape the extreme
temperatures of the desert floor, the small band moved to the
canyons where it was more comfortable because of the higher
elevation.
In 1884, Judge John Guthrie McCallum of San Francisco
and his family became the first non-Indians to settle there.
McCallum, with the assistance of local Indians, built a 19 mile
stone-lined ditch from the Whitewater River into Palm Springs
bringing in pure, precious water for irrigation. Throughout the
19 century, various explorers, colonizers, and soldiers came

through the desert, but it was not until 1853 that the United
States Topographical Engineers mentioned the oasis of palm
trees and springs which they called “Palm Springs.” However,
the name did not stick at that time. After California became
a state in 1850, various stagecoach routes crossed the desert,
and Big Bill Bradshaw’s freight line began to stop at what
Bradshaw called “Agua Caliente.” The place was known by the
name or variations of “Palm Valley” until 1890, when Harry
McCallum referred in a letter to his post office address in “Palm
Springs.”
Hollywood discovered Palm Springs as early as about 1919. The
desert was considered a choice filming spot for many silent
films, and stars such as Rudolph Valentino, Ernest Torrence,
and Theda Bara could be frequently spotted in town. Since
then, Palm Springs has become known as “The Playground of
the Stars.”
Miramonte Resort is located in Southern California’s greater
Palm Springs Desert community of Indian Wells. It is situated
among 11 acres of olive trees, citrus groves as well as rose,
herb, and vegetable gardens. Miramonte Indian Wells Resort
and Palm Springs continue to attract more visitors and
residents each year, not only for their beauty, but also for their
rich history.
