The role of the gut microbiome
The gut “microbiome” is the term for all the organisms in your gut. It’s a massive ecosystem made up of
trillions of bacteria, yeast, fungi, and viruses. The gut microbiome is involved in many gastrointestinal (GI)
functions including digestion, and the maintenance of normal gut physiology and health . 1
Gut dysbiosis has been associated with a number of GI conditions, including functional GI disorders
(FGIDs). Whilst it is not fully understood whether this is a cause or consequence, gut dysbiosis may trigger
a proinflammatory state which could contribute to the onset of FGIDs . This has led to the reclassification
1
of FGIDs, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), as disorders of the microbiome-gut-brain axis 2,3

Respected Guidelines: The British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) and European Society of Primary
Care Gastroenterology endorse probiotics as a potential IBS treatment, especially for abdominal pain and
lower gastrointestinal symptoms.
Duration Matters: The NICE and British Dietetic Association suggest trying probiotics for a minimum of 4
weeks , while the BSG recommends extending this period to 12 weeks for a comprehensive assessment .
