               How I’m embracing the

               future by becoming an

               Independent Prescriber

               Part 2

If you’re considering becoming an independent prescriber, you’re probably
feeling a mix of excitement and nerves—at least, that’s how I feel as I
prepare to start my course at Birmingham University. It’s a big step, but
it’s also an incredible opportunity to develop your skills and make an even
bigger impact on your patients’ care. Here’s a glimpse into my experience
so far, along with some of the insights I’ve gained along the way.

Connecting with the commitments I couldn't make,
community such as working for the practice

For me, the decision to pursue post-qualification. Another option
is to pay for a DPP. Numark have
independent prescribing was deeply partnered with Ashburton Academy
personal. I didn't want to be left and funded me with a DPP. Their
behind in this rapidly changing support has lifted a huge weight off
landscape. I wanted to continue my shoulders, and I am incredibly
growing, both in knowledge and in grateful.
the level of care I provide. As an
information pharmacist, I often Tackling assessments and
receive inquiries about becoming an study days
IP and the intricacies of independent The university also provided us with
prescribing itself. So, I embarked on a timetable for study days and
this journey, eager to enhance my assessment days. Seeing the plan
skills and knowledge. made everything feel very real—
The path to becoming an IP is and, I’ll admit, a little intimidating!
not without its challenges. One The assessments involve OSCEs
of the most significant hurdles is (Objective Structured Clinical
finding a Designated Prescriber Examinations), which are completely
Practitioner (DPP) to supervise your new to me. OSCEs include role
training. I reached out to several plays, testing communication skills,
local GP practices, only to face history-taking, clinical decision-
refusals or conditions that required making, and physical examinations.
They’re designed to ensure we can
                                                            deliver safe, effective patient care.
