How I’m embracing the
future by becoming an
Independent Prescriber
Kenny Chan
Lead Information Pharmacist at Numark
Pharmacy is progressing, and one of the
most exciting transformations will be
pharmacist Independent Prescribing. By
September 2026, every newly qualified
pharmacist will step into the world as
an Independent Prescriber (IP). This
shift places a spotlight on those of
us already in the field, encouraging
us to embrace this new role and
expand our expertise.
A personal decision
For me, the decision to pursue independent prescribing was deeply personal.
I didn't want to be left behind in this rapidly changing landscape. I wanted to
continue growing, both in knowledge and in the level of care I provide. As an
information pharmacist, I often receive inquiries about becoming an IP and
the intricacies of independent prescribing itself. So, I embarked on this journey,
eager to enhance my skills and knowledge.
The path to becoming an IP is not without its challenges. One of the most
significant hurdles is finding a Designated Prescriber Practitioner (DPP) to
supervise your training. I reached out to several local GP practices, only to
face refusals or conditions that required commitments I couldn't make, such
as working for the practice post-qualification. Another option is to pay for a
DPP. Numark have partnered with Ashburton Academy and funded me with
a DPP. Their support has lifted a huge weight off my shoulders, and I am
incredibly grateful.
