A couple of key things a new member
of staff need to understand are:
• Do not supply a brand against a generic script unless there
is specific in-house guidance to do so. Any brand supplies
should be checked with your dispensary manager as
inappropriate supplies here can generate losses. Often in
pharmacy there are brand equalisation deals in place which
means brands are supplied against generic prescription. Whilst
there are brand deals available in GP dispensaries, there needs
to be analysis carried out to check if the prescription for those
items should be written as brand or generic.
• Whilst there is no pharmacist in the GP dispensary, this does
not mean that prescriptions can be handed out without a
thorough checking process in place. Scanners allow for the
dispenser to check their own work. No scanner then a second
dispenser needs to check the prescription before handing out.
• Do not over stock. Dispensaries can run on an order to script
basis – this is the most profitable way of working and helps
cash flow.
• Most dispensaries still run on green scripts. Good prescription
management is the responsibility of all staff and the backs of
the FP10 forms must be completed fully and correctly in every
case to prevent losses. Each mistake costs £9.65 per item
when prescriptions are reclassified as paid when they should
have been exempt.
• All staff should learn to do all dispensary tasks, If one person
leaves or goes off sick then someone else should be able to
step up and carry out any tasks they were scheduled to do.
