 ASSET MANAGER • NO. 11/2019
AIRPORT CITY • 11
The objective of the AIRPORT CITY ZURICH property owners association is to upgrade the area. Work and lei- sure will dominate; residential space is not possible due to existing noise protection legislation. Nonetheless, the site, which has been retired as a cantonal workplace zone in the structure plan, should be lively both on weekdays and on weekends and evenings. The envisaged goal of the landowners for the area between Zurich Airport and Glattbrugg station, which was developed in 2016, pro- vides for an urban space with attractive exterior design and an innovative human-powered mobility system. In or- der to achieve this, the planning and infrastructural condi- tions must be created for a carefully developed transition – adapted to the needs of the economy and the environ- ment – from a rural and un-built-up area to an urban land- scape.
Identifying feature – Flyline
According to the envisaged goal of the landowners, a cen- tral, innovative, non-motorized traffic axis (Flyline) in the city center should connect the airport/Circle with the Glattbrugg station. It allows efficient, emission-free and quiet traffic in the AIRPORT CITY and is to be laid out over the natural terrain. The cantonal office for transit, which took up the idea and advertised a competition, is responsible for this development.
In the city center, pedestrian traffic is expected to dominate in AIRPORT CITY. This requires considerable investment in public transit and the construction of the Flyline, to which attractive restaurants and bars, sports and leisure facilities, cultural offerings and shopping areas are connected. In the medium term, a concentration of parking spaces in cen- tral parking garages on the edge along the Birchstrasse is planned. The parking facilities are to be managed jointly and be available for every use at any time.
High quality jobs
Around 300,000 more people than today will live in the Canton of Zurich in the next 30 years. They will partly re- side in Glattalstadt, emerging to the south of the AIRPORT CITY, from which they will commute to jobs in Winterthur and the city of Zurich. In order for commuters to get into the AIRPORT CITY cantonal workplace zone by public transport, the national public transport network must also be expanded. There is no way around it.
The renovation of the Balsberg station, its shift 200m to the south and its expansion to double track are urgent.
The SBB's planning work is underway. What looks more difficult is a direct connection
to the primary east-west highway network. There is no direct connection here.
A direct highway connection is in the common interest and should be promoted as a trailblazing project. Only with targeted improve-
ments in accessibility will the promising potential of the AIRPORT CITY ZURICH
be fully utilized.
