On day 3, the weather took a turn for the worse. After two beautiful days,
the playing conditions deteriorated considerably. Temperatures
plummeted, and misty rain and high winds dominated the day. The
matches went back and forth in basically a dead heat. However, in the
next-to-last match, the wily Christie parred hole 17 to win the
Championship. Christie was overheard saying “Ding-Dang-Dong”* at the
East players. When the dust settled, the West had defended their title 19-17.
Substantial quantities of beer and Margaritas served to heighten the thrill
of the victors and assuage the agony of the defeated.
