7. The collection should include recreational, popular and fictional materials such as classics,
novels, etc. to meet the interests of the college.
8. A book should not be included because of the race and nationality of the author.
d.1 Serials
Acquisition of periodicals and newspapers are either purchased or accepted as gifts or
Exchange of publications for the following reasons:
o To keep the library collection current with information on subjects needed to support
ISU’s curriculum.
o To provide materials not currently available in books or other resources; and
o To provide for the research and information needs of students, faculty, staff and
administrators.
Individual titles are selected on the basis of students and staff recommendations
according to the following criteria:
o Accuracy of content.
o Accessibility of content through indexes.
o Demand.
o Representation of a point of view or subject needed in the collection.
o Relevance.
o Reliability.
o Use or potential use.
o Format.
o Chronological coverage.
o Cost of the subscription.
Newspapers are purchased to give local, metropolitan, national and international news
coverage, and to represent community or interest group viewpoints. Subscription cancellation
will be based on the same criteria. The library maintains approximately 10 subscriptions. When
a decision to subscribe is made, the format (paper, microfiche, or both) will also be determined.
Decisions on periodical subscriptions may be made by the Library Committee. Anyone who
requests a periodical subscription will be notified of the decision. The Acquisitions Department is
responsible for all periodical processes, procedures and record-keeping. Once a periodical is
processed and placed in circulation (including display carousels), caretaking will be assumed by
the Circulation Department until discarding is necessary.
d.2. Format
The format of a periodical subscription may be paper, electronic or microform.
Format will be determined when the subscription is first authorized, but is subject to
review whenever appropriate.
d.3. Donations and/or Free Subscriptions such as Gifts and Exchange Publications
Decisions regarding donations and/or gifts will be considered using the same
criteria used for paid subscriptions. Any donation will become the property of the library
