Story of Dr. SG: A Mathematician’s Journey Through Yoga and Healing
Dr. SG, a passionate long-distance runner and mathematician, had once thrived on the thrill of marathons. After completing eight marathons and countless other races, each powered by hundreds of miles of rigorous training, he found himself increasingly plagued by pain—stiffness in the neck, back, and hamstrings. The core issue? A complete disregard for stretching. The intensity of his physical activity, unbalanced by flexibility training, had gradually strained his body to its limits.
A serious car accident, which caused a whiplash injury to his neck, marked the turning point. The pain was unrelenting. Around this time, a friend mentioned how Yoga had helped with his ski injuries, succeeding where physical therapy and cortisone injections had failed. Inspired, Dr. SG turned to Google—typing "yoga fairfax"—and found Adhiyogi’s class.
What followed was a transformative experience. Within six months of practicing under Adhiyogi's guidance, his neck and back pain had significantly reduced. Within two years, they were entirely gone. Though his hamstrings remained a work in progress, improvement was steady and promising.
But Yoga brought more than just physical healing. One day, while attending class on a carpeted floor, Dr. SG began sneezing uncontrollably. Assuming it was a dust allergy, he mentioned it to Adhiyogi. Instead of agreeing, Adhiyogi asked a simple question: “Do you drink milk?” Surprised, SG admitted he did—quite a lot, in fact. Adhiyogi then suggested that milk might be inflaming the mucous lining of his lungs, making him hypersensitive to dust.
Skeptical yet willing to try, SG stopped drinking milk. The first month was tough; his symptoms worsened. But by the second month, the allergies were completely gone. Since then, SG has removed milk from his diet, substituting it with soymilk, while continuing to enjoy yoghurt and cheese without issue.
Through his yoga journey, Dr. SG discovered more than pain relief—he found an intuitive, holistic way of understanding his body, guided by a teacher who combined ancient wisdom with practical insight.
OM Shantiḥ.
