2. 5 īśvarapraṇidhānādeva aṣṭāṅgayogasāphalyamanyathāsāphalyam।
Only through Īśvarapraṇidhāna, Aṣṭāṅga Yoga becomes successful, not otherwise .
Aṣṭāṅga Yoga first proposes Self Realization through Samādhi and later Spiritual Liberation from Body-Mind complex. Thus, Aṣṭāṅga Yoga becomes minimally successful when Self- Realization occurs due to its practice. Aṣṭāṅga Yoga becomes fully successful when a practitioner gets Spiritual Liberation. However as explained in the Sutra 2.3, these goals are possible only when the ego of a person is totally eradicated or transcended. It has been fully explained how the eradication of ego is possible only through Īśvarapraṇidhāna in the Sutras 1.6 and 1.7. Thus, Aṣṭāṅga Yoga becomes successful only when Īśvarapraṇidhāna is practiced. And there is no other alternative to Īśvarapraṇidhāna in this matter. Let us consider some references to support this logic further.
