134  TOPIC 8 QUALITY CARE ENVIRONMENT
Potty training is not expensive. A potty chair, a dozen pairs of training pants and a relaxed and pleasant attitude are needed. More than 80 per cent of children experience setbacks during toilet training. This means that what we call „setbacks‰ are really just the usual path to mastery of toileting. Ninety-eight per cent of children are completely daytime independent by age four .
Until a child is toilet-trained, diapers are used to collect urine and bowel movements. It is estimated that a baby uses six to 10 diapers a day. Generally, there are two choices of diapers – those made of cloth or the disposable variety. Parents need to decide on the type of diapers they want their baby to wear.
Diapers shall be changed in the child's own crib or in a diaper changing room. Diaper changing surface must be smooth, nonporous, and equipped with a guard or rails to prevent falls. Diaper changing surface must be cleaned with disinfectant and later dried using single-use disposable towel. Additionally, infants and children shall not be left unattended. Any items which might harm a child must be kept out of a child's reach. Liquid soap, individually dispensed, single-use hand towels, single-use wash cloths, and covered storage containers for soiled items must be made available at the diapering area.
