Environment for Infants and Toddlers

By the end of this topic, you should be able to:
1. Define infant and toddler space;
2. Discuss the importance of touch and movement in infantsÊ and toddlersÊ environments; and
3. Differentiate between infantsÊ and toddlersÊ floor plans.
INTRODUCTION
In Topic 2 we discussed the importance of designing good physical environment for young children and how the physical environment has a strong impact on childrenÊs development. Indeed, current studies and perspectives explain that physical environment plays an important role in supporting children's physical, emotional, language, social and cognitive development. The environment in which the infant and toddler are cared for or grow can make a significant difference in their experiences and development. Thus, physical environments for infants and toddlers should be well-designed to allow them to gain new experiences and understanding based on their needs. When the environment is designed correctly, infants and toddlers are likely to develop a sense of security and interest to explore through self-directed activities with their peers. Thus, this chapter discusses the important of physical environment for infants and toddlers and how a well-designed environment can affect childrenÊs development in
