Supporting Student Notes:
According to an October 2008 survey by the Center for CIO Leadership:
“CIOs assert that they have strong, established relationships with their peer executives and are leading and influencing
across the organization, even when they lack formal authority. However, only 74 percent say their business colleagues
are aligned with that vision. A parallel gap is revealed between the 90 percent of CIOs who say they know how to ‘lead
and influence’ and the 80 percent who claim that they are regarded as trusted advisors.
‘We have a seat at the table,’ says the CIO at a leading global bank. ‘We have the benefit of the doubt and now we
have to prove that we should have that seat at the table.’”
The Gartner 2011 CIO Survey reveals that almost half of all CIOs expect to operate their applications and
infrastructures via cloud technologies within the next five years. This change will necessitate that CIOs reimagine IT
and lead their organizations through a process of creative destruction.
– Reimagine IT to support growth and competitive advantage
– Reimagine what it means to be a digital enterprise
– Rethink value from an outside perspective
– Rethink the impact of your people from inside the IT organization
– Reimagine IT's influence on business success
In repositioning themselves and IT to support enterprise innovation and growth, CIOs must recognize two issues
standing in their way: benefits realization (the achievement of business benefits) and IT skills. Unless addressed, both
issues will prevent IT from reaching its full potential.
