Mat Gunkel is the classic BAYADA clinician: a skilled RN with a heart big enough to take in every client
need. Mat gets his energy from caring for others. He researches clients’ conditions and even goes on his own to seminars and conferences to learn more.
For his pediatric client Dominic, who has
cerebral palsy, he started
a Kickstarter/GoFundMe
to raise money for a new exercise bike. It’s just one more way Mat has gone above and beyond daily care routines in the six years he’s worked with Dominic.
In 2018, Mat won BAYADA’s top award for clinicians “exemplifying
the highest standards of care.” After Dominic was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, Mat took extra training on caring for diabetic patients—and then took the time to train new nurses on Dominic’s care team.
For Mat, all of this is just everyday life in the career he loves. “It’s amazing to be able to work with Dominic—he has some complex medical needs,” Mat says. “It’s really kind of forced me to go out and go to symposiums and get my hands on new literature and bring that back to the family and to the nursing team. So it’s been rewarding as a nurse and as a person, working with Dominic, while practicing at the top of my license.”
