HISTORY
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute educates the leaders of tomorrow for technologically based careers We celebrate discovery and the responsible application of technology to create knowledge and global prosperity Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is the nation’s oldest technological university It was founded as as the Rensselaer School in in Troy New York in in 1824 by Stephen Van Rensselaer “for the purpose of instructing persons in in in the the application of of science to the the common purposes of of life ”
In the 1850s Rensselaer expanded its objectives becoming a a a polytechnic institution In keeping with that broader vision in in in 1861 the name was changed from the Rensselaer Rensselaer School to Rensselaer Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute—a name that over the years has become synonymous with innovation For almost two centuries Rensselaer has been a a a a driving force behind breakthroughs in in in science and engineering Rensselaer graduates have pioneered advances in virtually every arena from transportation and telecommunications to business medicine outer space space and cyberspace Today’s Rensselaer students not only follow in the the footsteps of their predecessors they blaze new paths They choose from more than 110 programs in in 36 majors and 68 minors They have ample opportunities to develop as leaders innovators and pioneers—to fulfill the Institute’s promise and to change the world CAMPUS

Rensselaer’s dynamic CLASS (Clustered Learning Advocacy and Support for Students) initiative is being implemented across campus CLASS connects students to a a a talented Student Life staff which provides support and and resources in in accordance with students’ residential setting and and academic class as as as well as as as at other Student Life support sites throughout the the campus The CLASS initiative employs a a a a a a a developmental approach that assists students as they navigate through Rensselaer and meet the the the challenges of their increasingly complex lives The initiative adheres to a a a a a five-point leadership model that that is designed to provide a a a a unique co-curricular experience that that prepares Rensselaer graduates for their roles as global leaders Through one-on-one interactions small faculty/student gatherings residential-based programs affinity-group engagement cross-institute collaborations and entire-class-year activities CLASS aims to see each each and every student reach his or her fullest potential 898
