...Frank Lloyd Wright was provoked alright! He
started a movement of modest and sensible
dwellings to counter a Mies philosophy of class
hierarchy and concentration. There is a French
connection in both Matta-Clark and Frank
Lloyd Wright where their visits to Paris opened
their minds on how architecture can and
ought to be. ...free. Jacobs House 1 is a product
of a new revelation of existing conformist
architecture and a yarn of a di

Usonian democracy as part of natural

I study how our natural and built
environments tend to compete
over ownership of available spaces.
I took this image of a oor when my :RRG
graduate class visited The Ford
Residence in Aurora, Illinois built in
1948. The home owner decided not
to cut the intruding root, but instead
they let it grow and freely encroach
into the house. This situation
demonstrates not only this eternal
conict of natural versus built
environments, but also how it can
sometimes be okay to allow these to *ODVV
co-exist and even compete without
external (human) interference.
