Preface



                  This  Ketengban  pre-primer  series  has  been  written  to
            teach  pre-reading  and  pre-writing  skills  and  the  most
            frequently  occurring  vowels  in  the  Ketengban  language.
            These  are:  a  e   0   u.  The  Ketengban  language  is  spoken  by
            approximately  ten  to  twelve  thousand  people  living  in  the
            Star  Mountains  of       the  eastern  highlands  in  Kecamatan
            Okbibap,  Kabupaten  Jayawijaya,  Irian  Jaya,  Indonesia.

                  This  series  of  pre-primers  should  be  taught  prior  to
            the  Primer  series  entitled,  Ketengban  Upu  Peteremna  Buku  and
            beginning  with  number  4.  The  method  is  adapted  from  that
            followed  in  several  other  languages  in  Irian  Jaya,  among
            them,  Berik,  Bauzi,  and  Kwerba.       The  method  followed  is
            adapted  from  that  used  by  Des  Oatridge,  a  member  of  the
            Sumer  Institute  of  Linguistics.

                  There  are  20  pre-reading  lessons  in           the    series
            introduced  over  the  time  span  of  4 weeks  at  the  rate  of  one
            lesson  per  week  day.  There  are  additional  lesson  materials,
            including  a  writing  lesson  for  each  day,  not  found  in  these
            student  books  but  rather  found  only  in  the  Pre-Primer
            Teache~'s Guide.


                  These    additional      instructional  materials  and  the
            directions  for  teachers  are  given  in  the  Ketengban  teachet's
            guide  entitled:  Ketengban  Upu  Peteremna  Lap  Pena  Buku         1.
            The  pre-reading  skills  taught  in  this  series  include:



                 a.}  Holding  the  book  right  side  up.

                 b.)  Left  to  right  and  top  to  bottom  orientation.

                 c.)  Auditory  discrimination  excercises.

                 d.)  Visual  discrimination  excercises.
