BIOPHILIC DESIGN
BRINGING NATURE INDOORS
Restaurant, Office and Institutional designs have been utilizing green spaces for years and thankfully we are now seeing this trend make its way into residential design. And why not? What could be better than a full "green" wall that not only looks great but improves health and wellness.
Technically the term for these green walls is Biophilic Design which simply means the incorporation of plants and natural elements into a space. The health benefits from live plants is astounding and even more so when plants are selected for their particular life givingproperties. Consideraddingpotted lavender to your bedside table to reduce anxiety and encourage relaxation and/or a
Snake Plant which releases oxygen into the air at night. Plants known for increasing air quality by removing harmful VOC's
(volatile organic compounds) include spider plants, boston ferns and peace lilies. Consider adding edible plants and herbs in your kitchen. Parsley for detoxing and breath, Rosemary for it's digestive and anti-inflammatory properties.
Plants are visually calming and restorative and also provide acoustic comfort. Stimulating our sense of sound is the other important factor in creating a biophilic space. Adding trickling water in the form of a fountain or water feature adds instant relaxation. Alternatively, sound can be added in the form of music or by downloading a great app. We've tried a few and like the customization and price of the Noisiliapp. www.noisili.com
