WHAT IS OPENING IN SPACE

Openings in space define a building and give it a "face". From within a space, we

can see only the surface of a wall. It is this thin layer of material that forms the

vertical boundary of the space. No spatial or visual continuity is possible within
adjacent spaces without openings in the enclosing planes of a spatial field.

Symmetrically designed perforated façades give the structure a sense of calm, a

clear grid of openings lends rhythm and structure, free placement creates

excitement. Horizontal banks of windows give the façade a direction and large-
scale openings convey transparency. Opening in space performs a number of

functions including allowing light into a room, ventilation, creating a view and

connection with the external context. Daylight will differ according to the time of
day, the time of year and will depend on different locations. Daylight has a

positive psychological effect as well as the practical benefits of reducing energy

requirements for lighting. Light can enter a building in a number of ways – direct

sunlight, skylight and diffuse light, external reflected light and internal reflected
             light from room surfaces.
