2. USE and UF ref er ences. The USE ref erence is made from an un-
authorized term to an au thorized term. USE fol lows the un authorized
heading, but pre cedes the au thorized one. UF, which stands for “used
for,” is the op posite of USE and co mes be tween the au thorized head -
ing and the un authorized one. USE is com monly called a see ref er -
ence, which is made for syn onyms, vari ant spell ings, and dif ferent
head ing con struc tions.
