The Long & Short at Croft Castle
Friday 22nd June, 2018. 10.00am to 4.00pm
Two circular walks. Everyone sets off for a walk down the Fishpool Valley, learning about the restoration of these ponds and the relationship to the 19th Century ‘Picturesque’ movement.
The groups part – one for a shorter walk through the lower parklands, including the famous ancient chestnut tree ride. The second group ascend gently over Bircher Common to Croft Ambrey, an iron age fort, before descending to join the route of the short walk. Meet together at the tearooms followed by a guided tour of the walled garden.

Walk 32
The walk meanders through fields and country lanes before heading uphill (one steep stepped climb) into the beautiful Badnage Wood
- known locally as the ‘crocodile’.
We continue high up in the woods before descending to a friendly inn.

Walk 33
We walk around this Countryside Restoration Trust farm in the Golden Valley looking at the features in the landscape left by the 16th Century entrepreneur, Rowland Vaughan, who developed a water meadow system to irrigate, drain and fertilise the meadows.
We will also view the Hereford cattle and different breeds of sheep on the farm, along with the diverse range of wildlife present, before returning to the new education centre for afternoon tea and cake.
