Geology & Landscape
of the Wye Gorge
Sunday, 17th June, 2018. 10.30am to 3.30pm
Walk 10
The walk looks at the spectacular scenery of the Wye Gorge, which is eroded deeply into the Forest of Dean plateau.
The rock succession has Devonian conglomerate formed on an arid land surface by flash floods, succeeded by fossiliferous Carboniferous Limestones, deposited in clear tropical seas. We see King Arthur’s cave in a cliff line smoothed by water flowing at a higher level than the present-day Wye.
