museums steam days guided walks interactive For young and old, discover landmark places and their fascinating stories.
Hereford Cider Museum
On the original factory site of iconic cider producers Bulmers, this wonderful museum pays homage to Herefordshire’s cider heritage displaying the traditional hand-working methods of cider making, some still alive today. Annual events and cider competitions, the tearoom and shop purveying Herefordshire ciders, perrys and juices as well as apple-related gifts make this popular with both groups and individuals.
Hereford Waterworks Museum
Engineers, historians, as well as families enjoy the Waterworks Museum’s unrivalled collection of original working steam water pumps, many used right until the 1960’s to service Hereford’s water supply from the River Wye. Open Tuesdays only with additional ‘In Steam’ weekends through the year. The fun children’s waterpark shows the science of water pumping with a whole range of interactive mechanisms in the safety of the play area.
Black & White House Museum
This picturesque 17C landmark building in High Town, has served as a bank, a butchers and more. Now an interesting museum, it tells the stories of life in Jacobean times and is furnished in period style with an internationally important collection of English oak furniture. There are hands-on activities for children including replica clothing and puzzles. This year the museum is celebrating its 90th anniversary
Hereford City Guided Walks
Starting at Hereford Cathedral, daily 1.5hour guided walks (April-Oct) awaken Hereford’s historic and important buildings and monuments. Discover the City’s role in the Civil War, its famous people and characters like Nell Gwynne, Elgar, the Kings and important figures that have shaped the City, county and even the world.
Walks are conducted by knowledgeable volunteers from the Guild of Guides. Booking is useful but not essential.
