The flat, grassy common beside Llangorse Lake has views of the surrounding hills
and mountains. This is a popular spot for picnics and is grazed by horses and
sometimes cattle. Llangorse Lake is the largest natural lake in South Wales and is
home to a 9th Century artificial island, known as a Crannog. A replica Crannog in the
style of a thatched, round house is accessible when open via a wooden and concrete
walkway. The access can get flooded in very wet weather. Permits for water sports
including sailing, rowing, and canoeing are available from the Lakeside Shop. Tarmac
and hard surfaced paths lead to the edge of the lake. The jetties leading into the
lake can become slippery.
How to get there: Llangorse Lake is signposted on the B4560 halfway between
Talgarth and Bwlch and from the A40 Post code: LD3 7TR.
OS Grid Reference: Explorer Map OL 13 or Landranger Map 161 SO 128 275
Public Transport: X12 (TC) Builth Wells to Abergavenny goes through Llangorse
on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Parking: Tarmac and stone dust car parks – can be large potholes, and roadside parking.
Nearest EV Charging: Llangorse Lake Car Park, Brecon, LD3 7TR
Distance: Short, flat strolls across the Common. There is a path around the lake to the
far side which starts near the boat club. Here there is a bridge with a few steps each side.
The next field floods easily and can be wet. There is a narrow boardwalk and two kissing
gates along the first part of this route. It is easier to approach this path from the opposite
side of the lake starting from Llangasty, see that entry.
Facilities: There is a café and shop by the Common, a community shop and café
by the Village Hall and pubs in the village.
Toilets: Public toilets, including disabled access are in the larger car park.
