 GRADE Energetic
 WALK 11km/7 miles
 ASCENT 420m/1380ft

TERRAIN Farm tracks, fields and lanes to Lonely Shepherd, then tracks on open moor below Llangattock escarpment. Tracks, lanes and towpath to descend. Many stiles, few are dog-friendly.
A bracing walk up to the Lonely Shepherd rock pillar, which commands the Usk valley from the limestone Llangattock escarpment. Great views across to the sandstone of the Black Mountains. Back to Crickhowell via the ‘Mon & Brec’ canal, built over 200 years ago to transport lime from the Llangattock quarries.

a footpath sign on the left points to a right turn into a house driveway to find a gate into a field, and then another gate on the right into the wood. On emerging from it, turn left along a farm driveway and cross a stream. Enter the field ahead through a green kissing gate and turn right towards a conifer wood. Go through the metal gate, up through the wood and across a field to canal bridge 112 B .
Cross the bridge and two fields into a lane. Turn left along the road and at the next bend turn right up a driveway. Go through a gate on the left after the house and gradually ascend a rough lane passing a bat roost in a former chapel and a barn.
