CLUB...
Whilst not quite achieving at the same level of success as their younger counterparts the senior team also finished on an historic high. Finishing fifth in Division 1 East was the highest place finish for a Brecon XV in the history of the National Leagues. The second XV fared well after their promotion to Division B and excelled themselves by reaching the main Cup Final of the Rhondda and East Glamorgan Leagues. Although they just fell short of victory, against a powerful Penallta team, they can be proud of their performance.
Our Mini and Junior Section continued to flourish and the foundation laid at this level produced tangible results. Callun James was selected for the Wales in the Under 18 squad thus adding to his Under 16 Cap from the previous year. In addition Daniel Hiscocks won a Wales Under 16 cap, coming on to the field as a second half replacement and scoring a try against the “Old Enemy”, England. Five of our Under 15 team represented South Powys on their triumphant journey to victory in the Wales Schools Dewar Shield Plate Final.
With that all now confined to history, what about the future? The Club's aims are ambitious and in order to achieve them we need to continue to move forward. If the limit of ambition is to stand still then others will forge ahead and leave us in their wake. The emphasis has to be on providing excellent facilities to encourage the development of local talent and to enable them to play to a level that matches their true potential.
We are not there yet and although we look forward to the new season with optimism, there is much work to be done.
The Club is moving into a new era. The move to become an Incorporated Club will bring changes to the Management structure as can be seen at the foot of page 3.
The Executive Board will be elected annually to replace the old Main Committee. This is obviously a slimmed down and hopefully, more efficient management group. What is equally obvious is the number of sub-committees which need to be populated with a large number of volunteer members. Hopefully, with the support of the Club community, the requisite number of volunteer members will be drawn from across the spectrum of the club membership.
Without that support the Club cannot function effectively and we will not achieve our main goals and continue to move forward.
What is critical is that we amend a question which is often raised: “What is the Club doing or what has it done for me?” and instead ask, “What can I do to help the Club?” So often we view “THE CLUB” as being the management group or committee as it was previously. That concept is completely false. As members and players we are “THE CLUB” and the club’s success and development is dependent upon what we all are prepared to give. The management group may give direction or set priorities but if we are to achieve those goals then it depends upon the support of all of us.
Anyone interested in helping the management group achieve our goals, as players, coaches, administrators, supporters or sponsors, can be assured that they would be guaranteed a welcome within the management structure which is dedicated to the promotion and development of rugby at all levels. Or even if you feel that whole hearted support is all you can offer then that would provide a great foundation on which the management group could build.
There are also a number of important events which require considerable help from the whole of the club.
Camping at Parc de Pugh is a good example. Brecon Jazz weekend is fast approach and as usual we will be running a campsite at Parc de Pugh, both prior to and during the period of the Jazz. The Weekend has traditionally provided the club with a vital source of income. In terms of profit, it is the most important single event in which the club is engaged. As always, the success of the event depends almost entirely upon voluntary help. With that in mind, if you think you have something to offer in the preparation and running of the Jazz Camping or in any other way, no matter how menial, or in what area, then please do not hesitate to get in touch with me as from time to time I will be contacting you and asking for help.
Together we can create an exciting future and make Brecon RFC a Club to be proud of.
