MINI & JUNIOR SECTION
FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH
Gwernyfed RFC’s Mini & Junior Chairman Gethin Evans reports as the section continues to flourish and grow!
Our club is flourishing and is at the heart of community sport in the Black Mountains. We welcome new players into our section and our philosophy is to be inclusive, through not only providing a platform for young players, boys and girls, but also to enjoy playing the game and forging new friendships.
Our mini and junior section continues to thrive, and to date, we have 160 plus active players registered with the Heart of Wales region. The club has embraced the recent WRU directive of ‘Half a Game’ where all coaches within the mini and junior section are committed to ensuring that all members of
their squad - regardless of ability - are guaranteed to play what the directive states. Training takes place on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings with most matches kicking off on a Sunday morning. Each age group has qualified Level 1 or Level 2 coaches, qualified referees and first aiders.
Rugby festivals are entered throughout the season where Gwernyfed have performed consistently well across the age groups - such is the level of talent in our club. Last season our own festival in September was a huge success with more teams entering and a large number of supporters coming to watch. This season our festival took place on Sunday 24th September.
A big thanks must go not only to all our sponsors who support us to purchase new playing kit each season for our rapidly growing boys and girls, but also to the parents, guardians, grandparents etc. who make all this possible. We are also very fortunate to have a dedicated group of coaches and committee members that are central to the success of the minis and juniors section and give up their valuable time to make this all happen.
All this helps cement the future of GRFC which as new incoming Chairman, ex player and supporter I am proud to be part of.
Gethin Evans
Chairman, GRFC Minis and Juniors.
