The Construction sector has and will continue to be a strategically important sector for the region, owing to its high employment numbers and high GVA. However, the first six months of 2019 has seen the first decrease in workloads for small and medium sized enterprises nationally for six years. This is particularly concerning for the region given its reliance on SMEs and their prevalence within the local economy.41
The sector is supported by 21,632 full and part time jobs with this expecting to decrease slightly by 2.5% between 2019 and 2022.
Employment is largest in the following occupations:
• Electricians and electrical fitters (1,505)
• Plumbers and heating ventilating engineers (1,231)
• Production managers and directors in construction (1,193)
• Carpenters and joiners (1,174)
• Elementary construction occupations (1,141)

The main challenges reported by businesses operating within the Construction sector in the region include; making a profit, securing work, developing staff, recruitment and training. These are consistent with results collected during 2017 and 2018. From the data it is clear to see that of course securing work is crucial to the vast majority of businesses as this is the pre-cursor and conducive foundation to making a profit, developing staff and recruitment and training.
