Llandovery RFC Head Coach Euros Evans looks back on
a successful season and looks forward to the season ahead...
LLANDOVERY RFC
WHAT A SEASON THAT WAS!
What a year!! So many highs and very few lows. Cup final day in Cardiff was an experience that will never be forgotten. One lasting memory of the day was the tremendous support we had, clearly outnumbering our Tywi valley opponents and creating an atmosphere that our small town can be proud of.
Last season will always be remembered fondly but our focus quickly moved to the new season ensuring we are best prepared to replicate last season’s success.
I’m delighted that the coaching set up has remained the same. Our defence last year was the best in the league and only Pontypridd scored more tries than us. The way we like to play requires our players to be physically capable of being able to sustain high intensity rugby for long periods, Lloyd Phillips and Sam Collins prepare our players to do this. Our medical team led by Dave Woolward is without doubt the best in the league, the service they provide our players is second to none and we are very fortunate to have them. The only change in the management team is that Andrew ‘Cantona’ Jones comes in for Andrew ‘Tommo’ Thomas. These are big shoes to fill but I can’t think of no one better to fill them. Andrew will again be assisted by the legendary Joc Walters.
With the league expanding to 16 teams and a new structure being used, we are playing seven home and eight away in the first round of fixtures, this isn’t ideal, but hopefully this will level out during the second round when the league splits in two.
Every year some players will move on to pastures new and therefore it’s essential that
your development pathway allow you to replace these players. As a coaching group we understand the importance of “growing our own players”. We invest a lot of time and effort into our player development pathway to ensure we are able to produce players that have the skills required to play the “Llandovery Way” The Challenge cup last year provided us with the perfect platform to expose these young players to premiership standard rugby.
We are confident that players like James Davies, Rhodri Wall, and Jamie Hughes who excelled in this competition last year will now be challenging for Principality Premiership starts.
After a successful season the biggest challenge is to hold on to our players. We are confident we have assembled a squad this year to compete for honours and we look forward to the challenge of defending the Swalec Cup.
