         Ken Welch 1933 - 2019
It is with the deepest sadness and regret that we announce the sad passing of
Mr Ken Welch of Edinburgh who died on Tuesday 15th January 2019.
Born in Granton, Edinburgh in 1933, Ken left School at 14. His first job was in a wood yard, but he wasn’t there long. He was interviewed by a small fishmongers and was asked by the owner Mr Miller “Can you ride a bike? If you can, you’ve got the job!” A one stage he used to cycle 9 miles a day. Having stayed there for quite some time, Ken did his National Service in Egypt and Aden working as a military policeman in the RAF. Back in Edinburgh, he set up his first business, filleting on stoneage for other processors. Later he branched out on his own as a processor, employing and training many young people, straight from school to be skillful fishmongers.
Ken went on to open a number of shops in the area, three at one stage. Ken enjoyed a great reputation earning the respect of his fellow peers. His son, Garry, took over the business ten years ago – but Ken, never one to sit still, could still be seen on the block from time to time!
At stalwart supporter of the British Fish Craft Championship, Ken wowed the crowds and fellow fishmongers alike with his filleting skills, which were second to none, producing his famous ‘Angel Fillets’. He would also be just as happy to pick up a mop or a broom and help the floor crew tidy up. If you were lucky enough to have had a master class from him - you will know his skill for using an ordinary bone handled dinner service knife - “Its not the knife, it’s the man using it that does the job” Ken or Kenny as he was affectionately known, was a member of our Federation for many years and served as the 44th President from 2005 – 2008, one of the first Presidents to serve a three year term, such was his commitment to the industry.
Kenny’s passing will leave a huge void in not only the lives of his loving wife, Anne and his family, but also the wider Seafood Industry.
“A true gentleman”. Rest in peace Mr Ken (Kenny) Welch.
