Fish Friday 2019
Alerting our great UK Fishmongers!
Friday 28th June 2019 is Fish Friday!
Fish Friday is the
national fundraising day
for the
Fishermen’s Mission,
the only UK Charity caring
exclusively for our
fishermen, their
families and retired fishermen.
Fish Friday is the perfect opportunity to have a fishy event, a fishy supper, or complete a fishy challenge to raise funds for the Fishermen’s Mission!
Show your customers and community that you care about the families of UK fishermen lost at sea, that you want to support retired fishermen battling against ill health and poverty and that you are keen to help keep safe the men and women who risk their lives every day to catch our fish.
Fish Friday is for you so why not visit www.fishermensmission.org.uk/ fishfriday or call 0800 6341020 for more information.

Annual Review 2017/2018
Another busy year for the Federation
Another busy year for the Federation with President Andrew Kenny, and many Council members representing you at industry events.
This past year, we have been present at the Grimsby Institute Food Careers day, Humber Seafood Summit, annual Shellfish Conference and the e-fishnet project in Madrid, to name a few. We continue to have regular representation at Seafish Discard Action and Fish Legislation meetings.
In these uncertain times, it is more important than ever to promote our industry and for us to remain the voice of the independent fishmonger and throughout the year, regular meetings have been held to discuss such issues.
Master Fishmonger Scheme
1st – 3rd May 2018 saw the first Master Fishmonger Standard Course take place at Billingsgate Seafood School. Supported by assessors from all over the UK, who helped to prepare the students.
The course covered such topics as, HACCP, quality assessment, knife skills, fisheries and aquaculture, retail display, customer service, nutrition and cooking and was taught by MFS Master Fishmonger Gary Hooper and Billingsgate, Fish Inspector, Barry O ‘Toole. The course was received with fantastic feedback with all students receiving a pass.
With the next phase of nominations now open, the Federation looks forward to continuing to offer its support and guidance in this excellent opportunity and would encourage all fishmongers to participate – anyone interested or for more details please see the details enclosed in this newsletter.
6th June saw the First Master Fishmongers and Companion Fishmongers presented with their awards.
Held at Fishmongers’ Hall the event was attended by over 60 guests with the recipients receiving their awards from Prime Warden to Fishmongers’ Company – HRH The Princess Royal.
British Fish Craft Championships 2018
The 66th BFCC took place at Billingsgate Market, London on Sunday 26th August.
Sponsors present included representatives from Seafish, Sterling White Halibut, New England Seafood International, Grimsby Fish Dock Enterprises, Stolt Sea farm and Fishmongers’ Company. After a close fought and full day, Andrew Barker, of Hodgson’s Fish, Hartlepool, was crowned the 2018 champion.
Stephen Raguenet of Pro Fish Services in Aviemore became the new Craft Challenge Champion in his first year of competing.
As always, it was great to see many entrants competing for the first time from both independent sources and the retail chains.
With many achieving individual success, the Competition is still as popular as ever.
On a personal note – the Federation remains ever grateful to all its sponsors and supporters especially in these uncertain and sometimes challenging times.
