Growing the Future Courses
Over 3 years (2012-15) the project has delivered courses to over 5400 participants, from beginner gardeners to seasoned growers, across Wales. With the National Botanic Garden of Wales as a hub, courses have also been delivered, by a team of highly skilled and enthusiastic trainers, at locations in Bangor, Haverfordwest, Lampeter, Swansea, Cardiff, Conwy, Cowbridge, Denbigh and Llanidloes.
The wide range of topics on offer have been suitable for all levels and covered everything from
“Starting to Grow your Own” for true beginners to catering for those with less access to garden space
(e.g. “Growing Edibles in Pots and Containers”) and sessions that concentrate on organic growing, green manures, composting and even keeping chickens and bees. As well as the subsidised nature of the sessions, the topics and approach to flexible delivery (e.g. timing and geography) have afforded as wide
an audience as possible, i.e. a wide spectrum of ages and abilities, the chance to take part in Growing the Future courses. For example, during school holiday periods, family groups have particularly enjoyed interactive courses that inspire younger children to get involved with growing their own fruit and vegetables with the very popular “Grow me, Eat me, Family Fun” session.
The project has developed practical growing space for crops and demonstrations at the National Botanic Garden of Wales (the Growing the Future garden and growing field) and has also equipped classroom facilities to support learning. Each of the pan Wales hubs has offered their own, very individual, environment to engage with and inspire participants.
