Embracing a world of new opportunities with the Master Fishmonger Standard Awards
It is safe to say that since entering Master Fishmonger Standard Young Fishmonger Award last year that a lot has changed for Jordan Keig and his colleagues at the Fishmarket IOM. Jordan, who won the 2019 award, the first of its kind in the UK, saw off a shortlist of four fishmongers under the age of 25 to secure the prize.
Since entering the competition both Jordan and the business have seen a huge amount of media attention, with the Isle of Man going “crazy for Jordan”. They have now been featured by BBC North West, Isle of Man TV, Manx Life Magazine and many
more.
Jay Gore, manager of the Fish Market IOM, explains how entering the award has opened up countless new oppor- tunities for the business: “Getting involved in last year’s awards was a new thing to us all at the Fish Market IOM, learning as we progressed through the process, we are extremely happy that we decided to take on the chal- lenge. The MFS has opened a whole world of opportu- nity for us to showcase the excellent talent and seafood we have on the beautiful Isle of Man. It has also helped us network with like-minded businesses and the wider seafood community. The public interest and customer feedback during and after Jordan won the Young Fish- monger Award has been overwhelming. I would en- courage all fishmongers with a passion for seafood and the fishing industry to get involved.”
Beyond this, the competition has also boosted Jordan’s personal and professional development: “Winning the young fishmonger of the year award has helped me a lot with my confidence and ability to talk to people and has helped me with pushing myself to constantly improve within my working environment, I look forward to the future and the many new challenges I may encounter!” If, like Jordan and Jay, you are looking to showcase your talents and business, the newly expanded 2020 MFS Awards, is the perfect opportunity. With awards in sustainability, community outreach, training and much more this year’s awards cover all areas of fishmongering. Jay is excited to use the awards to push the capabilities of both the business and seafood their home island can provide: “we really did love every minute of the awards. We are looking forward to challenging again this year and pushing the boundaries of what our small island can do”.
