At long last, the Red Kites are soaring again...
Ceri Morgan
Hub Lead, Red Kites
Planning and preparation had been underway for 2020 Rugby for girls but sadly due to the Covid-19 pandemic it didn’t happen.
A cautious approach has been taken to 2021 and with guidance from the WRU their pathway to participation and stringent covid regulations we were able to re-start girls’ rugby at Trefecca Road on April 23rd. Fortunately, we have had tremendous turnout from new players as well as those who were keen to re-start again after the forced break and we regularly see 90 girls training.
Following a successful GRFC application for BeActive funding from Sport Wales towards changing facilities at the pitches we were joined by Jodie from Sport Powys at a training session in early June. A WRU representative joined us at training to witness our training sessions one evening recently and was impressed by the turnout and standard.
Red Kites are indebted to GRFC for use of the facilities at Trefecca road week after week. After 6 years Red Kites will soon have new playing shirts and we would like to express our sincere thanks to all our sponsors - Beacons Farm Shop, Headquarters Hair Salon, Alpacamyboots,
Totally Raw and UC Feeds and to Macron who are supporting clubs throughout Wales.
Thanks must also be expressed to Bronnie Jones – our hub officer who takes rugby into the schools and community – reaching girls of all ages and abilities.
As I write this I am delighted to report that on July 18th we took our under 9s and under 11s to the first games of the season hosted by the Arrows Hub at Pontypool Park and as well as having a thoroughly enjoyable morning the rugby was outstanding.
Thanks to coaches, GRFC ladies and to parents for your support in uncertain times.
Following covid it would have been easy for the Red Kites Hub to have failed but in a phoenix like manner the red kites are definitely soaring again! Come along and see for yourselves on a Friday evening at 6pm.
