GWERNYFED RFC
ANNUAL DINNER & AWARDS EVENING
 Gwernyfed RFC’s Annual Awards Evening
took place at the Castle Hotel in Brecon on Friday 17th May.
The Castle Hotel in Brecon played host to Gwernyfed Rugby Football Club’s Annual Dinner and Awards Evening on Friday 17 May 2019.
The massed ranks were joined by special guests Kieran Marmion, Irish international scrum half with 23 caps to his name, and Phil Steele, ex Newport RFC and Wales A player and now well-loved TV pundit and raconteur. Chairman Rob Stephens welcomed the spe- cial guests and a healthy throng of Club Mem- bers to celebrate a season enjoyed by all even if results had not quite reflected the effort put in by players, coaches and administrators. With seventeen sides wearing the green, white and black the future was assured, the
‘Gwernyfed production line’ offering a route through to the senior sides trodden by several who had won awards for their efforts in the 18- 19 season.
The most prestigious award, GRFC Clubman of the Year, went to Craig Parry whose loyalty and outstanding front row performances week in, week out, were justly rewarded. Players of the Season, judged by the coaches, were Georgia Williams for the Ladies XV, Geraint Powell for the First XV and Rhodri Williams for the Youth XV.
Other awards went to most improved players in Courtney Bailey, Ollie Rampling and Will Powell and a special mention is due to long-serving Ladies XV prop Rose Snape who
was adjudged best player by the spectators. Awards were presented by Kieran Marmion who, but for Connor Murray, would have been partner to Johnny Sexton many more times.
After dinner Phil Steel regaled the audience with tales of rugby and ‘behind the scenes’ TV work, keeping an excited crowd entertained. Most importantly, Phil stayed behind until the last drop was drunk, offering words of encouragement and sage advice to the younger players present.
As Chairman Stephens said, ‘A great night was had by all, one that brought 2018-19 to a close but one that heralded an equally enjoyable 2019-20.’
