East
Behind its roadside stone wall, tiptoe through the secret garden into Trumpet Corner’s tearoom. Open from breakfast through to afternoon tea, the lunches are light and tasty and the cake, oh the cakes are irresistible. Browse the creative gallery space too and look out for special events.
On the opposite side of the crossroad the Trumpet Inn’s distinctive black and white façade is a landmark for a tasty menu and a Wadworths welcome.
If you’ve been for a tour and tasting at Weston’s Cider mills, kick back in their Scrumpy House restaurant on site to extend your experience. Then keep it in the family with a pint in Elliot Weston’s pretty nearby watering hole, the Slip Tavern, that also does simple pub food for that impromptu stop.
Having won UK Cider Pub of the Year and listed in The Times Top 20 Country Pubs, you know the Crown at Woolhope is worth a visit, and the food is just as acclaimed (try the tasting menu nights). Also worth exploring is The Godwins in nearby Bartestree. Recently redeveloped and renamed, this distinctive gothic building is making its mark on Herefordshire’s food map from an early start.
West
Swathed in a lush green arable landscape at the base of the Golden Valley and named after the village where it resides, the Kilpeck Inn is a wonderful find after a visit to the local church famous for its Norman carvings. Relax with the papers by the fire in sheepskin lined chairs in the bar, then dine on an ever-changing seasonal menu, stylishly presented and warmly served.
Hereford City
The indie food scene in Hereford is abundant
and one of the leading lights is world champion gourmet burger, beer and cocktail ‘Meat Boutique’ The Beefy Boys. Need we say any more.
In contrast, the intimate and particularly personal dining at Aylestone Court Hotel, lets you create your own menu in advance if you choose and it is a popular spot for celebratory meals.
The Regency villa façade of Castle House Hotel offers the casual dining of the Ballingham Bar & Bistro (named after the owner’s lovely farm that supplies its fresh produce) or the silver service of the fine dining restaurant overlooking the old Castle Pool.
