Malvern
Again, an area that Herefordshire shares with a neighbouring county, this time Worcestershire; the magnificent Malvern Hills, themselves an AONB, showcase breathtaking viewpoints which attract a wealth of walkers and photographers. The historic hillside spa town is famous for its mineral water springs, which are purported to offer curative benefits. The celebrated Three Counties Showground attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to the many family and special interest events and shows it hosts. Malvern is perfect for exploring Herefordshire’s easterly corner.

David J Vaughan’s book The Little Book of Herefordshire tells us Herefordshire has almost 2000 listed buildings, 130 castles (not all accessible) and 178 bridges along the River Wye. For celebrity fans Herefordshire has produced some incredible talent; Bands The Pretenders and Mott the Hoople, actress Jessica Raine aka ‘Jenny Lee’ in Call the Midwife, antiques expert Kate Bliss, pop star Ellie Goulding, and ‘Boycie’ actor John Challis have either originated from, or have come to live in, this peaceful rural idyll. Musician Robert Plant has also been known to drop by for a sample of his favourite cider.

Look out for Herefordshire Life Through a Lens: this three year oral history project, inspired by the work of local photographer Derek Evans, illustrates the social history of Herefordshire. It begins with a photographic exhibition of his work and a film of Herefordshire’s hop heritage, with screenings at various independent venues around the county.
