Hereford Cathedral has welcomed visitors and worshippers for over 1,300 years. The building includes fine examples of architecture from modern times to the present day, including the beautiful Ascension stained glass window and sculpture by John Maine RA, installed in 2017 to honour the SAS Regiment.
2018 sees a host of wonderful events
and exhibitions, as well as the cathedral’s continuously enthralling architecture, history and shrines telling the incredible journeys that helped shape the world’s religion and laws of the land.
From 14 March – 29 April 2018 Poppies: Weeping Window by Paul Cummins Artist and Tom Piper Designer will visit Hereford Cathedral. Weeping Window is from the installation ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ by Paul Cummins Ceramics Limited in conjunction with Historic Royal Palaces, originally at HM Tower of London 2014. Treasures housed in Hereford Cathedral’s exhibition area include Mappa Mundi, the unique medieval map of the world, and the spectacular Chained Library. Temporary exhibitions for 2018 begin with Uncovered!, revealing how the latest scientific techniques are enabling researchers from all over the world to give fresh interpretations of the ancient books
in our collections. It runs until 19 May and will be followed by a display linking the centenary of women’s suffrage to the musical programme of this year’s Hereford Three Choirs Festival. The festival takes place 28 July – 4 August and features choral and orchestral concerts in the cathedral every evening.
The cathedral is home to the shrines of
St Ethelbert of East Anglia and St Thomas of Hereford - both have been recreated in their spectacular medieval colour schemes, and the summer of 2018 will see the launch of a new St Thomas Way pilgrimage route from Swansea to Hereford.
Cathedral tours take place every day except Sunday. Tours of the beautiful riverside gardens behind College Cloisters are also available for booked groups by arrangement and on Wednesdays and Saturdays from end May to end September for individuals. Tower tours are also available on selected days during the year.
