For young and old, Hereford has great places to tell its story on any day trip or short break.
Hereford Cider Museum
Build on the original factory site of the iconic cider producers Bulmers, this wonderful museum pays homage to Herefordshire’s cider heritage displaying the traditional hand-working methods of cider making, some of which are still used by some artisan producers today. Look out for events and cider competitions, and find Herefordshire ciders, perrys and juices as well as apple-related gifts for sale in the shop, after you’ve enjoyed a cake and a cuppa in the tearoom.
Hereford Waterworks Museum
Engineers, historians, as well as families enjoy the Waterworks Museum’s enthralling collection of original working steam water pumps, many used right until the 1960’s to service Hereford’s water supply from the River Wye. Open Tuesdays only, additional weekend ‘In Steam’ day events through the year bring the machines to life. The fun children’s waterpark shows the science of water pumping with a whole range of interactive mechanisms in the safety of the play area.
Black & White House Museum
This picturesque 17thC landmark building in High Town, has served as a bank, a butchers and more. Now an interesting museum, it tells the stories of life in Jacobean times and is furnished in period style with an internationally important collection of English oak furniture. Of particular interest are the rare wall-paintings, the four-poster bed and the baby-walkers. There are hands-on activities for children including replica clothing and puzzles.
Hereford City Guided Walks
The daily guided walks awaken Hereford’s historic and important buildings and monuments. You’ll hear about the history of the city from Saxon times, its role in the Civil War and its famous people and characters like Nell Gwynne, Elgar, the Kings and important figures that have shaped the City, county and even the world. Tours begin at the Cathedral and last about one and a half hours, conducted by volunteer members of the Hereford Guild of Guides.
