Apprentice Lineman
This is a position from which the employee learns the skills of a lineman. The apprentice lineman is typically required to complete a formal program of on-the-job and academic training that can last three to four years. The apprentice learns the skills under the direction of experienced journey-level and apprentice lineworkers. The type of work (distribution, transmission, etc.) would depend on the company (IOU, Cooperative, Municipality, Line Contractor, etc.).
Apprentices typically spend much of their time performing support duties for the journey-level lineworkers. Over time, and with the proper attitude and experience, apprentices are allowed to work in elevated positions. It is common for beginning-level apprentices to regularly perform tasks such as digging hand holes, trenching, stocking trucks, working on the ground, and other similar ‘grunt’ duties. Only by performing at a high level on the lower level tasks, will the apprentice be given the opportunity to advance. A great attitude is the single most important attribute for success.
