A Purpose Quest
We sat facing each other. The shade felt good. It
was dead quiet. Not even a whisper of wind.
My hands moved on their own. Smoothing out the
folded papers. Lining up the thesaurus and the pens.
Neat. Then I took one sheet. Folded it long ways.
“Close your eyes,” I said, my voice low. “Just…
relax.”
Julia unwrapped her sweater. Slow. Deliberate.
Folded it over her backpack. Placed them on the bench
beside her. Rested her hands on the rough wood of the
table and closed her eyes. “Okay.”
“This starts with something I call the Parable of
Purpose. It goes like this…”
