You’ll also have plenty of opportunities every
day to talk about your book. Before we look at what
a publicist can do for you, let’s look at what you can
do for yourself.
Quick-pitching
What would you say if you found yourself sit-
ting next to the publisher/agent/editor of your
dreams on a flight, train journey or in a bar with
only a few seconds to sow the seeds of your future
best seller?
There you are, chatting away, when the opportu-
nity presents itself. You’ve enthusiastically let it
drop that you’re working on a book, or that you’ve
already finished it, and you get the obvious ques-
tion:
“So, what’s it all about?”
There are a couple of ways you can answer this.
You could waffle on passionately about all the dif-
ferent topics you’ve packed into your book and how
it’s going to change the world and, in so doing,
prove that you haven’t got a focused grasp on your
book. Or you can zap them with a 1, 2, 3 quick-
pitch. This is where all the work we did on fine-tun-
ing your point also comes in handy. It goes like this:
