didn't say I lost everything." With a hint of defiance,
she raised her right arm, revealing the antique
timepiece adorning her wrist. "My dad left me his
collection of rare 19th century watches.” A sly smile
spread across her face as she added, "My stepbrothers
weren't thrilled about it, but well, now I have time on
my side."
With a clattering of glasses, three hotel employees
parked their hospitality trolleys beside us. Two more
arrived with folded tables on a dolly. One of them
wore a suit with a badge. In a flurry of tablecloths and
water jugs, they set up the tables and prepared for the
next event. The one with the badge approached us.
“Excuse me, sir, madam.” He searched our faces
and used his body language to signal the cruiser table
we were using had to go.
Julia thrust the money at me. There was no way I
was going to take it.
She flashed a huge smile at the man with the
badge. “Viva Las Vegas,” she said then aimed her smile
at me. “Take the money. You’re going to earn it.”
On the far side of the hall, a line of sofas faced each
