something of benefit to humanity, because we know
humanity evolves over time. Let’s call this your
Purpose Statement.
“This scenario obviously isn't real. It's a parable, a
made-up tale told to teach a lesson or share a moral
message, so it’s easy to remember and relate to.
“When you get to the front of the line, the powers-
that-be look at your slip of paper and either say, "Not
good enough; go back and try again," or else they say,
“Great, very good; you can get born."
“Armed with your Purpose Statement they send
you over to the "To-Be-Born Supply Department" to be
fitted out with all the attributes and talents you’ll need
to accomplish your purpose.
“Depending on what you’ve written, they might
grant you patience, caring, courage, humor,
organizational skills, eloquence, a flair for languages,
drawing or music, etc.—whatever you’ll need.
“Once you are filled to the brim with your
attributes and talents, you are ready to be born. But
here's the catch: just before you leave, the powers-that-
