when we stop blaming others, we start to focus on
what we can control.”
Norman emptied the five-gallon container of petrol
into the Golf, and Cheech went off to supervise his
men. He stopped abruptly and came back. He offered
his hand to Miriam. She did nothing. Cheech waited.
Miriam put out her hand; she thought he was going to
shake it but he just held it lightly.
"Lady, life is too valuable to waste and too priceless
to replace. You are responsible for your own life. Not
him. Not nobody else. You blame him; you learn
nothing.”
Cheech smiled and released her hand. He set off
back to check on the loading.
“See over there,” the old man said to Mark. He
pointed to the glowing dome of light on the horizon.
“Those lights? That’s the city—just ten more miles. See
that smoke just there? Two miles.”
“That’s Skolly Boys,” Tilly said, hoisting her child
