1) Descent
The entrance was a door that pretended to be a
shadow.
Hafid showed them where the plaster along an
alley’s dead end had been troweled with the wrong
hand. Zhara pressed her palm onto a hairline seam
and whispered a line of poetry that wasn’t Arabic
and wasn’t Portuguese and wasn’t a language at
all. The wall sighed. A rectangle of cool air opened
to the dark.
“Maintenance access,” she said. “Telecom
exchange from the radio days. Now it’s the
Mirror’s crib.”
Henry stepped through first. The staircase
smelled like old cables and sea. His flashlight
licked rust and salt off the handrail as they
