dropped along the spine of the hill. Carolina
followed, counting breaths; Sera closed her eyes
and listened to the city above, as if memorizing its
living frequencies in case they didn’t come back.
At the bottom, the tunnel widened into a
concrete throat that had once swallowed copper by
the mile. Now, light pulsed at a human heartbeat,
blue, then paler blue, then a silence that looked like
color.
Carolina glanced at her analyzer. “They’re
running the sequence,” she whispered. “Mirror
carriers at limbic band. And something else… a
cancellation sweep.”
Henry recognized the pressure before the
reading showed it, the way ears know a storm. “We
stay together,” he said. “No sudden words.”
Zhara gave Hafid a nod. He stayed behind at the
door with a battered pistol and the sad bravery of a
man who had already chosen his story. The other
four moved forward until the concrete opened into
glass.
2: The Room
It wasn’t one room. It was a room pretending to
be one, built of panes and reflections set at fractions
of angles, so whatever you looked at you also
