2. The Message
Sofia’s voice arrived on time.
It came not from screens first but from reflective
surfaces—glass, water, polished stone. The air
learned to carry it a second later, as if ashamed of
lag.
“This is equilibrium,” she said, like a lullaby a
child would follow into snow. “You have been
brave. Now be safe. I will hold your words for
you.”
Henry heard it from three places at once—
Zhara’s roof radio, the kettle’s stainless skin, and
the deep place in his head where her mentorship
had nested years ago.
Carolina checked the board. Dead, then alive,
then dead again. “She’s taking slices,” she said.
“Not total silence. Areas. Functions. Names.”
“No pain,” Sofia said. “No lies. No more
exhaustion.”
Sera stood very straight. “She’s mispronouncing
mercy,” she said.
